This article is aimed at presenting results of a research focused on written discourses and practices concerning the teaching of geometry and the use of educational materials in the 60s and 70s. Considering the Modern Mathematics Reform curricular and methodological orientations, we analyzed the written discourse of four normative documents of Santa Catarina state, Brazil, and we interviewed seven teachers in order to understand the teaching practice of geometry. The analysis of the documents revealed that Santa Catarina state incorporated the ideas of the Modern Mathematics Reform, recommending the use of several materials to teach geometry at secondary education level. Despite of this, it was observed that both guidelines for teaching geometry and recommended educational materials for modern mathematics were only applied in practice to a limited extent. Geometry continued to be taught in an abstract and formal way with seldom use of such materials
