Desocultando competências matemáticas à luz da história de vida: uma experiência num centro de reconhecimento, validação e certificação de competências

Abstract

This article emerges from the reflections made in an investigation developed in a New Opportunities Centre with the main goal to analyze understand and expose ‹hidden mathematics› in life of two adults (Teresa and John) involved in a process of mathematical competencies recognition. Since this investigation was developed by the teacher that followed the process of recognition, validation and certification of competencies of the two mentioned adults during a Master on Mathematics Education, the study was centred in mathematical competencies.

During this investigation, the questions that worked as guiding lines were:

(1) What importance has the RVCC (Recognition, Validation and Certification of Competencies Centre) in the life of the people who experience it?

(2) What is the influence of school in the way people see Math?

(3) What mathematical competencies people develop in different jobs? and

(4) Can we learn math through life?

In this article, the focus will be in the reflections made around the third and fourth questions based in John’s life history. The main goal of this article is to communicate some emergent results from the work done by the investigator and its tutor.
