The development of students’ mathematical reasoning requires a deep understanding of the mathematical processes. This paper reports a teaching experiment in a university level numerical analysis course and aims to analyze students’ mathematics processes when exploring investigation tasks and to understand the potential of these tasks in promoting students’ mathematical reasoning. The study follows a qualitative and interpretative approach based on three case studies. Data collection includes participative observation, students written reports and interviews. The results show that the investigations contributed to promote students’ mathematical reasoning providing them opportunities to experience several mathematical processes, including posing questions, formulating and testing conjectures, generalizing and proving results.
