This article analyses some aspects of the teaching-learning process of rational numbers. It identifies difficulties faced by students concerning the rational number sense, mainly related to fractions. It discusses different kinds of units and its relevance for the understanding of rational numbers. It is also discussed children´s informal strategies and processes of formalisation. The Portuguese elementary curriculum and the implemented curriculum is discussed in terms of the aspects approached before, as well as portuguese research studies in this field.
