In today’s society all citizens need to deal with the notion of probability in order to interpret many of the events they face in the various contexts of their life. In response to this need, its study has been introduced in the curricula of most countries as a way of understanding inherent uncertainty of these events, hoping that students think, apprehend and describe reality in a non-deterministic manner.
To plan activities and situations that help students construct a concept as complex as that of probability, it is essential that the teacher understand how this concept evolves throughout the life of a child and teenager. The search in the literature for explanations about the way this concept develops takes us to the works of Piaget and Fischbein and collaborators, which we shall analyze in this paper with a view to drawing certain implications for the classroom.
