This paper aims to emphasize the power and importance of problem solving in mathematics education, enhancing the potential of visual (re)solutions, especially because of the simplicity and creativity that these proposals may present. In this sense we begin by presenting an overview of the approach on problem solving, both in terms of research and at the curriculum level. Then several aspects associated with problem solving are revisited confronting the perspective of different authors, based on work carried out on this theme. Subsequently, and as a result of this discussion, we present some contributions, illustrated with examples, emerging from the approach to problem solving in teaching and teacher training, that highlight the importance of the complementary strategy seeing, and the links of problem solving with creativity.
