The "Second International Assessment of Educational Progress" took place between 1989 and 1992. During 1990/1991 a total of 29 countries surveyed Mathematics and Science performance of 13-year-old students and 14 of them also assessed nine-year-olds in the same areas. This article summarizes an analysis of Portuguese students' performance in Mathematics in the context of this study. Results show a low performance of both populations. Some heterogeneity was registered among geographical regions and types of community. Public and private schools show distinct outcomes, favorable to private ones in both populations. Grade repetition does not seem to bring any improvement in the students' outcomes. Some evidence was found about the existence of different representations of mathematics among 13-year-old students, depending on their school grade.
