This article intends to contribute to the knowledge of problems that novice teachers face when they begin their profession. It presents partial results of a research project developed with four novice teachers of 1º cycle of basic education in a school of surroundings of Lisbon. An analysis of the way how they put in perspective to be a teacher, how they relate with mathematics and also with parents/family is done.
Research conclusions point to the need of setting out the approach to mathematics teaching education in preservice, both at content level and didactis and using of manipulatives level. It is also mentioned that, given the large social diversity of our schools, it urges to introduce in preservice education anlysis and discussion of different cases, as well as aspects related to school/family relationships. It points also to the importance of supporting new teachers when they enter in the educational system.
