Abstract

Simulation is one main didactic resource that takes advantage of technology in probability and statistics education, besides being a tool for statistical work. With didactic aims, simulation can also be used without support of technology. In this work we analyze the importance of simulation in probability and statistics, its advantages and limitations as a didactic instrument. Then we use the analysis of a classic probability problem (Monty Hall problem) and its three possible types of solution to show that the technology in itself does not determine the mathematical activity and the student’s possible learning. Th is also depends on the didactic situation and the way in which the teacher organizes the classroom discourse. We finish with some recommendations about the use of the simulation in probability and statistics.
