This research intends to contribute to a better understanding of teachers’ cultures, related with the use of computers in the classroom. This study is part of a qualitative research concerning four groups of teachers with different computer knowledge and practices. In this paper we present two mathematics teachers’ perceptions about the importance of the computer in school and of its use in the classroom. One of the teachers uses the computer in the classroom and the other doesn’t use it. The conclusions of this study show that is only through the development of a new perspective about the teacher’s role as someone who promotes the pupils’ autonomy, that it is possible to contribute to the use of computers in the classroom. Another conclusion of this research concerns the development by the teacher of the capacity to handle with unexpected problems.
