The aim of this study is to analyze and relate the arithmetic and problem solving performance of 127 students from grades 3 and 4 of elementary school from two Brazilian public schools, aged between 8 and 11 years. Participants were assessed through two tasks: the Arithmetic Subtest of the School Performance Test (TDE) and a problem-solving task. Pearson's correlation test and Fisher's exact test were used in order to analyze the relationship between performances. The results showed a significant and moderate correlation between the areas analyzed. There was also an association between the different performance groups in the measures of problem solving and arithmetic, suggesting that a good performance in arithmetic is associated with a better performance in problem solving, so that most students with lower performance in arithmetic (90%) also underperforms in problem solving, and as arithmetic performance increases, so does problem solving performance. Thus, it is possible to state that arithmetic and problem solving are related and agreeing with the research about the theme, can be articulated in teaching from the early years of schooling.
