Abstract

The representation register of a function in graphical form is very important as it allows the visualization of the behaviour of the function as a whole, and therefore, it facilitated the detailed study of its proprieties. Duval indicated the importance, in the case of functions, that the conversion is done simultaneously in the two ways between the graphical and symbolic forms and exemplifies for the linear/affine function in a perspective that included the global interpretation of figural proprieties. For that set of functions and other that are studied in secondary schools those conversions are relatively simple.

However, in university teaching, due to a greater complexity and functions studied, the simultaneous conversions between the representations of the functions in the two ways become rather complex. In this paper, we present a solution to overcome this issue – the use of a set of basic symbolic units associated to a set of graphical basic units aimed at mediating conversions in both ways.
