About the Journal
Scope
Aims & Focus
Quadrante – Revista de Investigação em Educação Matemática is a research journal on mathematics education published by the Portuguese Association of Mathematics Teachers (APM). The journal aims at constituting a forum for exchanging ideas and experiences in the field of mathematics education research, by publishing research reports focused on issues related to the teaching and learning of mathematics, and on questions pertaining to mathematics teacher education and development, at all levels of education.
The journal publishes articles reporting empirical studies or theoretical essays, provided that they constitute original contributions to the field of mathematics education. Proposals for articles are submitted either to regular or thematic issues, the latter in charge of guest editors.
Audience
Quadrante is directed towards an international audience of academics, researchers, decision-makers, teacher educators, teachers, and prospective teachers in the field of mathematics education.
The journal opens up to a wide international scientific community, as reflected by the constitution of its editorial council and by the publication of articles in Portuguese, Spanish, French, and English.

Peer Review Process
Quadrante operates under a double-blind review policy, aiming mainly at ensuring a high scientific quality of the journal. The editorial team conducts the review process of all regular issues. For the thematic issues, this process is conducted by one or two guest editors.
Upon a proposal submission, the editorial team or the guest editors make a prior analysis to decide whether the proposal fits the journal’s goals. In order to be accepted for review, the proposed article must meet the following criteria:
- complies with the submission conditions described in the journal’s guidelines;
- presents a strong focus in the area of mathematics education;
- constitutes a theoretical or empirical research work, with an adequate structure;
- does not include inappropriate or discriminatory content or language.
If the proposal meets these criteria, the review process, which is independent of the prior conducted analysis, is initiated. The editorial team (or the guest editor) chooses two reviewers, among researchers who have a profound knowledge of the main theme of the proposal. Whenever possible, reviewers involve national and international collaborators from different institutions. The editorial team (or the guest editor) will ensure that those involved in the review process are not associated with any of the authors' institutions. On a double anonymity basis, each reviewer completes a review form on the journal’s website, guided by the following criteria:
- The relevance of the study and clarity in the formulation of research goals /questions.
- Adequacy of the theoretical framework and literature review to the study.
- Appropriateness of the research methodology to the purpose of the study (in the case of empirical studies).
- Presentation of the results supported by convincing evidence and adequately interpreted (in the case of empirical studies).
- Adequate development of the study and its discussion and implications for research (in the case of theoretical studies).
- Articulation between the conclusions and the literature review and/or the theoretical framework and explanation of the relevance of the study (in the case of empirical studies).
- Clarity, correctness, consistency, and structure of the text.
In the event of a strong discrepancy between the two reviewers' assessment, the editorial board (or guest editor(s)) will seek the advice of a third reviewer. Informed by the evaluation of all reviewers, the editor-in-chief (or guest editor(s)) makes a decision on the proposal and communicates it to the author(s), explicitly indicating one of the alternatives: (a) publication; (b) publication, provided the recommended changes are made; (c) requires substantial changes, subject to further revision; or (d) non-publication.
Reviewers’ comments will be sent to the author(s) together with the editor’s fundamented decision about the proposal. If a reformulation of the proposal is needed, suggestions will be offered to the author(s). In case the proposal is accepted subject to a set of recommended changes (b), author(s) should submit the revised version no later than one month after receiving the results of the review process; the revised version will be evaluated by the editorial board (or guest editor(s)), and the editor-in-chief will make the final decision about its publication. In case the proposal requires substantial changes (c), author(s) should submit the revised version no later than two months after receiving the results of the review process; the revised version will go through a new double-blind review process.
From the moment they submit the article proposal, authors may track it, on the journal submission system, at any moment along the review process.
Every year, a list of reviewers will be published.

Journal History
Quadrante – Revista de Investigação em Educação Matemática was first published in 1992. Initially, the journal published the texts of oral communications at the Research Seminar in Mathematics Education, organized by the Research Working Group of the Portuguese Association of Mathematics Teachers (APM). However, the following year it became a periodical research journal, publishing original articles and book reviews, intending to contribute to debates between the plurality of lines of thought that cross mathematics education.
The journal’s activity has been constant since 1993, with the publication of two issues per year, one of them being thematic.
Quadrante was a printed journal until 2018. From 2019 onwards, Quadrante is an open-access journal, being totally free. As such, its printed publication is discontinued.
